BASIC COLPOSCOPY COURSE

In frameworks of the Congress, a basic colposcopy course will be held on September 20th 2007 in two sessions- in the morning and in the afternoon. If you wish to attend this course, please fill in and return the application form to the Congress Secretariat e-mail address office@efc2007.org by September 1st 2007. Please note that it is necessary to send the application form for the Basic Colposcopy Course separately whether you have registered for participation in the Congress itself or not.

The registration fee for Basic Colposcopy Course is 100 Euros and includes attendance to course, two coffee breaks and lunch.

The application form for the Basic Colposcopy Course can be downloaded here.

Introduction

Aims and objectives
The aim is to provide an introduction to colposcopic methodology.

At the end of the course the participant should:

• have an understanding of cervical neoplasia
  - natural history of cervical cancer
  - anatomy
  - metaplasia (including CTZ),
  - dysplasia
  - cervical cancer screening

• understand how the colposcopic image is formed and its significance
  - explanation of the components of the colposcopic image
  - significance of the squamo-columnar junction
  - variations in vasculature
  - understanding of what aceto-whitening is and represents
  - correlation of colposcopic findings with histology / cytology

• have a basic competence in colposcopic image recognition
  - normal cervix
  - squamo-columnar junction
  - low-grade pre-invasive abnormality
  - high-grade pre-invasive abnormality
  - invasive

• have an understanding of the role of colposcopy in clinical management
  - practical guide to methodology
  - damage limitation – to enable conservative management
  - concept of adequate colposcopy and when colposcopy has limited value
  - audit/quality assurance

• be able to formulate a management plan on the basis of a colposcopic examination

Structure
One day course: 4 x 1½ hour sessions

As part of the introduction there will be an initial interactive session which aims to indicate the teaching objectives of the course and serve as a baseline assessment.

There will talks on the theoretical background of colposcopy and the principles of colposcopic management. The interactive sessions will focus on image recognition and management.

Interactive sessions comprise a number of images which participants are asked to comment on (is SCJ visible?: is there an abnormality?: what is the abnormality?). The answers/explanations occur in the feed-back session.
